Great fun and makes me want to get down there!! Sadly it
seems that it may never happen as I am not a member of a caving club and have
absolutely no intention of becoming one!! Do you entertain visitors? And what
hoops do you have to jump through to be 'accepted'?? Not
many hoops at all! You are welcome to get in touch and someone will take you on
a 'beginner's' trip. Or to apply to join our club go to www.swcc.org.uk
and follow the "joining" link. Also look at
www.caving.uk.com for
loads of caving related stuff, plus caving clubs all over the UK. |

Some great pictures and a really good way of capturing the essence
of the cave. The navigation through the site has been improved since I last visited
and it has really inspired me to hassle someone to do the real trip up to Smiths
Armoury! | 22.12.04 |

Can't wait to come visit. Ended up on the site just because
my name happens to be Pete Colling as well and found all these amazing things.
See ya soon! Pete, San Francisco. :-))
Nice one! You had me worried, I thought I had been writing to myself. So I'm not
the only one to look himself up on Google. Haven't stopped laughing yet! |

Very nice! It would be useful to be able to turn round
and retrace one's steps more often (or have I missed something?). Rock on...
You're right, but I think I would have assitant mutiny before
I got to that level of detail! |

Excellent trip, one I always wanted to do years ago. I started
caving with Axebridge Caving Group 1953 when in RAF and progressed to NW Caves
1977-1990. Thanks for trip, knees and other joints will not allow real thing nowadays. |

Really nice cave system and a fine website! Enjoyed the
tour very much. Thank you. If you are interested, you can visit www.carrollcave.org,
and check out Missouri's largest ongoing cave project. I had the privilege of
manufacturing the stainless steel gates/airlocks, for the 120', man-made entrance
shaft. This system has enormous potential. Have a great holiday season. Regards,

Great work! And great cave too: looks like a mix between
Doviza and Trebiciano (two lovely caves here in Friuli Venezia Giulia). Too bad
i can only pay a virtual visit :-( |

I think this was a great idea. A good way to see what the
cave is like and have a little fun while you're at it. I think that a better tie
to some detailed maps as you progress could be good? I
do show some maps, but also wanted the experience to be rather like a game where
folk had to learn their way through . . |

Thanks for a superb site.I have used it as a tool for helping
find the way on by visiting the site the day before a trip into the cave. Its
much more satisfying than "following a leader" |

Excellent Website! All great caves should be exploited in
such a manner. Lower-48 Americans' should take note and develop more websites
like this one! Thank you Alaska! (By the way, I am

I have been caving plenty of times but not yet become a
member of any club yet can you help me. You are welcome
to apply to join our club - we're a friendly and only slightly mad bunch, with
our own well -appointed cottages directly above the OFD system! Go to www.swcc.org.uk
and follow the "joining" link. Also look at

loads of caving related stuff, plus caving clubs all over the UK. |

A great site and tour. I managed to navigate most of the
way through OFD1. Not bad as I was going on memory from my last trip in 1964.
It certainly brought back loads of memories. Have the radiators in the clubhouse
still got drinks bottles as individual header tanks? I wonder whether anyone will
know what I'm talking about. |

|
Great idea, excellent photos. Almost thirty years since
my last trip but I still think I recognise a lot of places (not Dip Sump though!).
In those days we (UCWCC) usually had to enter via Cwm Dwr, owing to a bit of friction
with SWCC - despite many hours in the cave I never got to OFD3. I am looking forward
to Cwm Dwr and the sound being added. Ian. |

Great job on the site!! Nice pictures and a magnificent cave. If only we could
come and check out the cave. We're from Centerville High School at Centerville,
Iowa at the center of the United States. Near the Iowa southern border. We have
no caves in southern Iowa, just farmland. Thanks again from the Earth Science
II class at Centerville High School, class of 2005! :-) |

Oh what fun. I've poddled around some of the nearer bits in the last few years
but this makes a great break from work. Can we have the Northern Lights to play

Wow, I met up with some old friends from the SWCC tonight & they told me
what I was missing! A few year have passed since the Ogof FFynnon Ddu breakthrough
and our ways have diverged. Was it 1966? Paddy O'reilly seems to have appeared
on 17/8/04 but wonders where the rest of us are. Well poor Colin gave up some
years ago and I went off to Africa for a while. The rest of us are around (?)
and I was touched to see some of the gang at the latest funeral. I have had
the best time with the Club and dived 9 times through the sump before the Cwm
Dwr breakthrough (one over the 8 was an easy way to remember it). I was also the
lucky one to first make it through to Cwm Dwr which really opened things up.
Now I will try the virtual trip. Well done! Thanks
John. Here
is where he dived! |

Adam sent me the link and it was excellent. In my thinner days I used to do
a fair bit of caving in Arkansas with a large revolving group of folks. Had a
wondeful site where we would camp overnight in a small cave, then spend 8 to 10
hours in the larger one. Brings back very fond memories viewing your site. Truly
wonderful job with the mapping and photography. Thanks! For the mapping I have to credit Paddy O'Reilly
(4 entries below) for much of the early work. |

Well done swcc. easier than the real thing! Just read visitors book and saw
Paddy O'Reilly's message (not related just a coincidence). Went caving on Sunday
in Ofd2 - first trip in almost three years. Three detached retinas and five eye
operations had kept me out of caving for a while. Unfortunately I caved for the
first time in glasses and steamed up in no time at all. I stumbled around with
Dave Wadsley for a while and made it to Gnome passage. I could see very little
and wiping my specs on my fleece (the only clean thing at hand) only made things
worse so we decided to return to the entrance before I broke my neck. Not exactly
an auspicious return to caving but I had broken my duck. I'll try next time with
contact lenses! Your virtual tour was much clearer/easier and bought back many
fond memories of numerous trips. Thanks Pete. |

What can I say? The images brought back fond memories of a night in 1966 when
Clare Harvey and I hauled maypoles upstream from the Confluence
and left them there for the following weekend. How Colin Fairbairn and I then
forced our way up Maypole Inlet and peered for the first time into the dry passages
above. The days when Susan O'Reilly and I camped overnight at the Trident (no pool of water back then) and our discovery
of Gnome Passage, and the
huge Chamber that we initially called the Vatican - but just a week or two later
renamed The Big Chamber Near The Entrance - when three
hours of digging revealed how close to the surface we really were. Then the push
across the Traverses into an OFD III in high flood.I'm amazed that my original
survey is still doing service some 35 years later! I could, even today, traverse
from OFD I to Smith's Armoury without getting lost-and-believe it or not sometimes
actually awake from a dream of doing so! Where are the old names today ? Terry
Moon? Mike Coburn? John Osborne? Charlie George? Clive Jones? Mick Day? Paddy :-) Thanks
Paddy, it's an honour to have you visit and share your memories of those early
discoveries. I will soon be adding pictures from your Maypole Inlet, hope to be
there this weekend! |

Great although my caving experience is almost non-existant I have had the pleasure

Congratulations on an excellent site. I spent many happy weekends in OFD as
a University College Swansea student in the early eighties. This brings it all
back. We've been living in Australia for four years but are heading home soon.
Those grey skies and misty, rain-sodden South Wales mountains; ah, I can hardly
wait. :-) Its been really hot here recently! |

Very impressive, just did the escape route for the first time in about 5 years
- but (very minor criticism) it's much easier to find the tunnel out of the rawl
than in the real thing, and you should add the bit where everybody (well, maybe
it's just me) forgets to turn left after bolt traverse to get to the dugout. |

I have been caught up in a phenominal amount of work, shortly
followed (or actually interupted by) 2 surgeries and a case of pneumonia. I am
currently recovering from my second surgery. I used to go caving a minimum of
one to two times a month, and would often go every weekend for several months
in a row. Now, I have only been twice in the last year due to circumstances. Thank
you! I was going through depression and withdrawal. This was a pretty good fix.
It has also inspired me to go ahead and plan for some upcoming trips as soon as
I am able. By the way, consider adding some common sense safety info. (Minimum
of three lights, helmet with chin strap, layered clothes or appropriate clothes,
ankle supporting boots, use three points of contact at all times on climbs, etc.)
Also add in conservation info. Take nothing from the cave, kill nothing, etc.
Overall, your cave is great! Best caving site I have seen in the last 10 years
or more. Glad to have helped in your recovery!
I do intend to add a page about conservation /geology/safety etc. Thanks! |

| Brilliant - it
really takes me back around 40 years to the time I did the 1-2 through trip. RUCC
came to OFD intending to do the Cwmdwr to OFD2 trip, but the 1-2 route had been
opened a couple of weeks previously and a member of SWCC offered to lead us. The
photos are really evocative of my thro trip, particularly Dip Sump, Pwll Twll,
the boulder squeeze and the Letterbox. Thanks for setting this up. I look forward
to more routes appearing (eg Cwmdwr, OFD3, Columns). |

of the system and the efforts of the South Wales caving Club to preserve the integrity
of these magnificent monuments to nature.Although I was completley Exhausted by

OUTSTANDING! What a neat "trip" for an old retired caver. Almost
(ALMOST!) makes me long for the wet and cold and dark and discomfort and - well,
YOU know! Without a doubt this is the finest cave trip I've ever taken insofar
as bruises, fatigue, muddy equipment, wet everything, etc., goes. My caving these
days is only in my memories and in the stories we all trade so well among fellow
cavers. I've been a member of the USA's National Speleological Society since about
1959, as well as a member of the Potomac Speleological Club (PSC) in Arlington,
Virginia, my original home group. I learned of your site in the PSC's newletter.

You've already been told a million times how great your tour is. I'm an older
caver from California and can't remember when I've had more fun on the Internet.
A gentle suggestion. For first time cavers or arm chair wanna-bees, your tour
is perfect. For more experienced underground route finders it was still fun, but
a bit too easy. How about two tours, especially as you add more scans of more
passage. One tour just like what you have now, but another one for experienced
cavers offering more choices and chances to get lost. Of course I'm assuming that
these are maze caves or at least have maze sections in them. If so, rooms offering
three or more choices would sweeten the adventure. Still it's only armchair critique.
What you have right now is wonderful! I can hardly imagine the amount of hard
work that must have gone into creating this "virtual" tour. Thank you
so much. Rob Froelick :-) Thanks Rob, you've made
my day! I do plan to add more sections (and there are miles and miles more to
shoot!) yes, enough work just getting it to this point! Please would you pass
the link around your caving colleagues www.ogof.net Have you found it all? Peter |

the tour and it'll be most realistic! :-) except
I don't reccommend electricity and baths! |

Great experience doing the through trip. Enjoyed it more than the real thing!
I think I did the through trip, with mud and water, Allan Richardson and Clipjoint
around 1998! I could get into this armchair caving. The photography is superb
and all involved are to be congratulated on a superb website. I'm looking forward
to exploring new passages as they come on-line. :-)
I see you did Top to Bottom, but you can also go the other way! |

| Well
I have signed up for a temp membership to the Orpheus Caving Club today and just
got back from south Wales after taking that giant leap from show caves to the
real thing by going round (a small part of) the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu (or better known
as the Cave of the Black Spring). All I can say is WOW, the guys were great and
the cave was amazing, who would have guessed that jumping over pits that seem
to have no bottom to climbing almost sheer waterfalls would be so much fun! I
think the best part for me was standing under one of the many underground waterfalls
and looking up getting covered in fresh clear spring water, amazing. Some of the
formations were also astounding and I can not find the words to express the feeling
of turning around and looking down the 'hole' that I had just spent 45 mins climbing
up to find that there is no way I would be able to get back down... Overall the
whole experience was like nothing I have ever done and I will be coming back for
more without a doubt. Thank you to Doug, Boyd, Paul (or was it Phil) and Pete
for introducing me to a wonderful the world of caving. |

Well Peter, you have been very busy with the digital camera. This is a very
interesting concept, well executed, and shows the possibilities of digital photography.
Unfortunately my knowledge of OFD is rather limited (I will rectify this some

bill nicely. (USA, but I'm a Brit) |

- good fun. should be obligatory viewing BEFORE people attempt the through trip
- would save a lot of rescue callouts. The new survey grinds its way on - not

| I
loved it, great site and the springyness of the rope too. I've only been to the
Dales in 4 or 5 caves and "Little Nasty River Cave" in Wales as we renamed
it, never to OFD in the GB. Going out the other way I got the chance to write
a message in the book that did not appear what I saw, sad because the line below
was one of my best caving friends, the one who made a suggestion on the pint.
quite a coincidence as I just hit the link by a chance. Great fun, what a brilliant
idea. Now I'll go for my pint. |

Nice idea, but some of the pics are so dark you can hardly make them out. It
is extremely easy to correct this with any decent photo software, most of which
allows you to brighten only the dark areas of the pic, etc. I
use PhotoShop to adjust, and re-size the pictures, but do let me know which pages
seem too dark, and I'll have a look! Are you using Mac or PC? Some pictures
are meant to be low key, and lit from a distance away to simulate the real lighting
from a caver coming along the passage towards you, like here. Has anyone else found the pictures too dark,
or any other problems? - do let me know. Thanks for visiting! Peter. |

| Wow!
This really takes you back: it's been some years since I was there. Now my 9 year
old daughter Beth is getting into caving. She found the round-trip so now wants
to know if she can be a leader! Would the addition of music and/or sound effects
(ie the river) be feasible? I like the idea of adding the
river sound on certain pages, must find a digital recorder for my next trip! And
Beth is certainly well on her way to being a leader! |

Fantastic - My first caving trip in Wales!!!!! Most caving done in Peak
and Dales - it's now on my to do list - especially compared to some of the muddy
holes in the Peak. How about getting a virtual trip through the sump!!!!!! Or
whats beyond? - mind you the visability won't quite be that of the States or the
Blue holes! Thanks for the excellent work - might even get my other half to go
caving is she watches this. |

I became frustrated trying to get through the cave. I don't think that this

A well thought-out concept and excellent implementation; I'll add a link from
the MCG site. It gives a new depth to the principle of virtual caving. The discerning
virtual caver can now spend as long on your tour as he would have done underground,
without getting cold or wet. My only criticism is that the beer doesn't taste
so good afterwards! |

Spededo!!!!!!LOL The Cave Quest was pretty cool, espessially how you can fall
of the passage and go into a bunch of pieces! :) It was also educational,
Outstanding Site! I like your site a lot my teacher said to go on here I'm
glad she did Thankx- Great site, I would reccommend it to anyone who is a student
or adult. This was really fun and it's good for class so students can understand
what caves look like. I think you should do this for lots of cavers and caves.
This is pretty cool. This site is so COOL!! Normally I don't like to take
notes but u made it FUN!!!!!U r sooooo good at making things 2 learn really fun
Thanks. This is a very cool site! Thanks for putting it up on the web.

Came on again today and completed the loop. When I did the trip 40 years ago
the cave was in flood and I think we went in via the escape route. That was a
wonderful trip. We're off to OFD 2 now. . . Have now completed OFD 2. Great trip.
I'm looking forward to the through trip when it's completed. I have done quite
a lot in this part of the cave as recently as 20 years ago. I'd like to see it
again for real sometime |

| Even
the most sophisticated / experienced will be impressed by this. Is it a world
first ? If natural modesty allows, crediting the cavers / web designers involved
would seem to be well deserved. (My most dedicated
assistant is Felicity, who often appears more than once in the same shot in OFD
II! Tom also helped on one trip in OFD I. I am the modest photographer and web
designer. As for precedents, I once saw a simple version shot in Goatchurch, with
left/right/forward/back arrows. Has anyone seen any others? Happy New Year! Thanks
to all for the great feedback, PCW) |

caved quite a lot in OFD, it was a pleasure to show our two 80-year old dads what
it was all about! Excellent tour, thanks very much. Linda and Richard. - The
elderly parents were quite content to view the cave from the comfort of armchairs
and a cup of tea! Tony and Viggo |

I've just been looking at your site. If I didn't have so much to do today
I'd probably go on the whole tour... and probably will do over Christmas. It's
absolutely brilliant - at last I don't have to keep trying to explain to people
what it's like "down there" or why I'm obsessed with finding and exploring
new cave (particularly the Pant Mawr Master System - which must be similar???
- do you know what the theories are on this?). Are there similar virtual tours
on the www of other caves? If not then there should be. |

Just took your virtual tour around OFDI on the SWCC web site.... Thanks
it brought back some fond memories of when I used to spend most weekends at SWCC.
Ah what a pleasant change at lunchtime to take a quick round trip of OFD1. What
about a virtual 1-3-1 trip for those really boring afternoons?? Keep caving |

Peter, really enjoyed your show. Do you think you can repeat for Daren
Cilau? I don't want to go down that place ever again and a slide show like your
OFD one would be just the thing needed to get me to retire! I did Cwm Dwr
to OFD1 via the escape route on Saturday so seeing this show with the cave very
fresh in my mind was really good. I think it's really great to see someone
doing something to portray our often maligned sport in a really positive way as
you have done. Clearly everone looked like they enjoyed their trip and your shots
showed everyone using the correct safety gear on the traverses. I liked this a
lot. | 14.10.02 |
